You deserve to feel your best.

Bloating, discomfort, low energy…

These are all signs of a body (and gut!) out of balance.

As a naturopath, I take a holistic approach to wellness. Rather than focusing on symptoms, it’s important that we seek + uncover the root cause.

Together, my intention is to support you on your path back to wellness. To empower you with the knowledge + tools to understand and care for your body.

Book Consultation

As a qualified naturopath, I help my clients with digestive + gut issues, and have a special interest in functional digestive disorders. I also work with a variety of other conditions (which are more often than not, related to gut health!). As the old adage goes… all disease begins in the gut!

In our work together, I combine an in depth understanding of your unique health picture with relevant lab testing (test, don’t guess!) to help us uncover the deeper root causes of your symptoms. I also use herbal and nutritional supplements, diet and lifestyle changes to help my clients. By providing you with knowledge and the right tools, my intention is to help you create a clear path back to wellness. Learn more.

Feeling burnt out, lethargic or just not yourself? Feeling burnt out, lethargic or just not yourself? 😩 We know that stress (especially CHRONIC stress!) can do a number on the body 🙍🏽 And if not kept in check, can even land us in a state of burnout ⚡️
.
How does this happen? 🤔 You're probably familiar with the term 'adrenal fatigue', which typically describes a drop in adrenal production of cortisol following prolonged stress 📉
.
Though this term gets the point across, it's worth mentioning that the more accurate (but less sexy!) term to describe these changes is HPA-axis dysregulation 🔬
.
Our HPA-axis acts as our stress-response system 💥 When we encounter a stressful situation (real or imagined!), the HPA-axis initiates a hormonal cascade that results in the secretion of cortisol from our adrenal glands 🔥
.
Under normal circumstances, cortisol and stress hormone output should normalize once the stressor has been overcome, returning the body to homeostasis ⚖️ However, when this system is repeatedly activated (think: ongoing stress) we can see maladaptive changes in the HPA-axis ✖️ This may result in high or low cortisol levels, or a dysregulated cortisol rhythm 📉
.
Common symptoms that may result include:
✖️Fatigue
✖️Irritability
✖️Dizziness on standing
✖️Sleep disturbances
✖️Poor concentration + memory
✖️Low stress tolerance
.
Here's 6 tips to help manage burnout:
.
1️⃣ Add protein to meals: Low blood sugar spikes our cortisol - including a healthy portion of protein at all meals aids satiety and can help promote stable glucose levels.
.
2️⃣ Eat regular meals: Although intermittent fasting has numerous benefits, fasting can act as a stressor + stimulate cortisol release (meaning it's probably something to avoid for now!). Instead, aim to eat more regular meals focusing on whole foods ✔️
.
3️⃣ Choose low-moderate intensity exercise: higher intensity exercise has been demonstrated to increase cortisol output. During this time, it can be beneficial to focus on more gentle movement (yoga, walking, pilates) over your sweaty HIIT workout ⚡️

Simple healthy eats 🌿 Big salad from yesterday Simple healthy eats 🌿 Big salad from yesterday with tomato, spinach, some organic cheese, tinned salmon, shallots, sauerkraut + a literal mountain of quinoa (might have gone overboard there!) 🌱 Topped with a drizzle of garlic infused extra virgin olive oil (such a good hack for those doing low-FODMAP) and apple cider vinegar 👌🏽
What's driving your histamine intolerance? 🔥 If What's driving your histamine intolerance? 🔥 If you struggle with frequent symptoms such as itchy skin, hives, eczema and headaches, then you may suspect that you have issues with histamine ✖️⠀
.⠀
Within the body, histamine mediates several allergic-type reactions. Histamine is also naturally found in a variety of foods (including banana, chocolate + wine!) 🍌🍫🥂 For those with histamine intolerance, eating too many of these histamine-rich foods may trigger these symptoms (including itchy skin, hives, headaches + more!)😖⠀
.⠀
In these instances, temporarily following a low-histamine diet may help to reduce symptoms 🌿 But let's be clear: we don't want to limit these foods forever! Instead, it's important that we work to address the underlying causes to improve our tolerance to these foods ✔️⠀
.⠀
Histamine intolerance is often related to impaired break down and clearance of histamine from the body 〰️ Two major enzymes responsible for breaking down histamine include:⠀
✧ DAO: in the gut, diamine oxidase (DAO) breaks down histamine from the foods we eat. ⠀
✧ HNMT: within other body tissues, histamine N-methyltransferase (HNMT) helps to clear histamine. ⠀
.⠀
When there is insufficient activity of either of these enzymes, histamine may accumulate in the body leading to symptoms 🤧⠀
.⠀
So why would DAO or HNMT not be working effectively? 🤔 Factors that may influence activity of these enzymes include:⠀
.⠀
✖️Gut issues: DAO is sythesized by enterocytes + stored in the cells lining our intestinal tract. Digestive issues that impact these cells may reduce DAO, including dysbiosis, leaky gut, IBD, IBS, SIBO, etc.⠀
✖️Nutrient insufficiency: DAO and HNMT require various nutrient cofactors to work optimally (e.g. B6, copper + vitamin C)⠀
✖️DAO-blocking drugs: including NSAIDs, morphine, various antibiotics, cimetidine + more!⠀
✖️Genetic factors: genetic polymorphisms may influence enzymatic activity+ various nutrients may be beneficial to support these pathways!⠀
.⠀
Addressing the underlying factors that contribute to histamine intolerance is SO important (rather than simply avoiding histamine!). Need extra support? I'm available for online consultations 🌿
